New Hampshire is one of nearly a dozen states getting a one million dollar federal grant to expand access to medication-assisted treatment for drug addiction.New Hampshire currently has the fewest number of physicians in New England who are certified to prescribe Suboxone, a drug used to reduce opioid cravings and ease withdrawals.Recently the federal government raised the number of patients doctors are allowed to treat with Suboxone from 100 to 275.

Following up a previous study that discovered adolescent bipolar disorder was linked to greater cigarette smoking and substance use disorder, a new study finds that risk of substance abuse was even greater five years later, particularly among those with persistent bipolar symptoms.Researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) investigators also found evidence that the presence of conduct disorder, in combination with bipolar disorder, may be the strongest influence on the risk of smoking and substance use disorder.Study findings appear in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.

Enfield Discusses Student Substance Abuse Surveys

The Enfield Together Coalition, a substance abuse prevention group, had Evaluation Consultant Bonnie Smith come to the Enfield Town Hall to discuss the Enfield 2015 Alcohol and Drug Use Student Survey that was taken by students from John F. Kennedy Middle School, Enfield High School, and Enrico Fermi High School.The surveys focused on the CORE drugs, which include alcohol, marijuana, heroin, prescription drugs, cigarettes, and e-cigarettes.They also looked at binge drinking and driving under the influence.
