A team of CSUF nursing, social work and human services faculty are working together to train students to screen for Substance Use Disorders (SUDs).Through a $258,823 grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), a federal agency in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the program's first year will fund a "SBIRT" (screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment) training program, a standardized procedure developed by SAMHSA to identify drug and alcohol abuse.Continue reading in the Orange County Register.

The dangers of hurricanes, earthquakes and floods can seem clear, with high winds, rising waters or powerful tectonic movements understandably drawing the most concern.But a new study published today found that a natural disaster can also cause lasting damage to a population in another way: through an increased risk of substance abuse.Researchers from multiple institutions, including the University of Miami, examined data from New Orleans to understand if residents were more at risk for substance abuse after living through the trauma of Hurricane Katrina.

The Chandler Coalition on Youth Substance Abuse (CCYSA), a program of ICAN: Positive Programs for Youth, will host a public meeting regarding Proposition 205 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the Chandler Police Department, 250 E. Chicago St.The meeting will feature speaker Debbie Moak, director of the Governor's Office for Children, Youth and Families.Moak will present the core reasons for opposition to Proposition 205, the legalization of recreational marijuana.
