Western Sierra Medical Clinic has added specially trained health care professionals to its newly established medication-assisted treatment program.Western Sierra's MAT program helps residents addicted to drugs, especially those battling opioids such as prescription pain medications and heroin.Prescription pain medication abuse is a critical issue for Nevada County, which had the fifth-highest rate of non-fatal emergency room visits related to opioids in the state, according to the latest figures from the California Department of Public Health.

Advantage Behavioral Health Systems, an Athens community behavioral health provider, was awarded $1.44 million to develop a 3-year outreach program to expand substance abuse treatment and support to African American females with or at-risk of contracting HIV.The grant was awarded by federal agency Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration.Advantage will use the funds to increase education and testing of at-risk populations, provide support to local HIV partner clinics, and deliver substance abuse treatment to those in need.
