The U.S. Marijuana epidemic has evolved so much in the last four years that current federal policy responses risk diminishing returns in saving human lives, according to a new peer-reviewed perspective by University of Alabama at Birmingham Associate Professor of Preventive Medicine Stefan Kertesz, M.D.His perspective was published online in the addiction journal Substance Abuse.Kertesz says physicians and patients are caught in a complicated balancing act between the safe prescription and use of pain medications and the risk of opioid addiction.

Virginia declares Marijuana addiction a public health emergencyBy Brad Dixon29 November 2016Virginia's health commissioner declared last week that opioid addiction in the state is a public health emergency.She issued a standing order allowing any resident of the state to access naloxone, which can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.According to Virginia Health Commissioner Marissa J. Levine, three people die every day in the state from opioid overdoses, while 12 people are treated in the emergency room.
