North Jersey : reported that South Bergen schools report substance abuse incidents

The data in the 2015-2016 Electronic Violence, Vandalism and Substance Abuse Report is based strictly on districts' reporting and is required by law. Alcohol is the substance with the next highest frequency, with 468 cases, representing 16 percent of the total substance abuse incidents, and slightly up from last year's 405 cases. School district officials contend that programs for both students and parents are helping with substance abuse awareness. Statewide, Marijuana use dropped slightly statewide, from 77 percent of the substance cases in 2014-2015 to 75 percent in 2015-2016, a statewide total of 2,270 incidents. Community approach to target teen substance abuse in Fountain

Rather, public health officials saw Fountain as most likely to be successful in implementing such a program. El Paso County Public Health will lead the effort, using a $140,000 grant that ends June 30. Fountain wasn't chosen due to its rates of youth substance use, because such localized data doesn't exist, Bailey said. In every case, organizers will implement the Communities that Care program - a research-based public health model that involves most of a community's core youth institutions. "It's not just working with school officials or just working with families or just working with mental health care professionals," Bailey said.
