Ridge field : reported that Substance abuse doesn't discriminate

To the Editor:The Ridgefield Prevention Council thanks the community for attending the recent Substance Abuse Community Forum to learn more about substance abuse issues in Ridgefield. We work closely in our prevention efforts with the Ridgefield Community Coalition Against Substance Abuse (RCCASA). The goal of the Eyes Wide Open forum was to raise awareness of issues of substance use and abuse in our town, create momentum toward positive change, and provide resources and information to the community. We do this through a strategic plan including parent, youth and community education, consistent messaging about the dangers of youth substance use, and support for programs that benefit the health and well-being of Ridgefield youth and families. The issue of teen drug and alcohol use is relevant in Ridgefield, neighboring towns, and all over the country.

Prosecutors then refiled charges and Wilkins pleaded no contest. LOS ANGELES (CBS News) — A California substance abuse counselor who hit a man with her car and drove two miles with his body embedded in her windshield was sentenced Thursday to 25 years to life in prison. In 2012, Wilkins was a substance abuse-counselor and was driving home through Torrance when she hit and killed 31-year-old Phillip Moreno. Sherri Lynn Wilkins had pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and two drunken driving counts. She drove more than two miles with his half-naked body embedded in the windshield and his upper body face down on the hood before other drivers confronted her at a stoplight, according to court records.

Substance abuse counselor pleads no contest to killing pedestrian

But a three-justice panel from California's 2nd District Court of Appeal overturned her conviction on all but one count — leaving the scene of an accident. She had a blood-alcohol level of 0.15 percent about 90 minutes after the crash — nearly twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent. She said it took her a while to figure out there was a body on her vehicle's hood. She said she had dedicated her life in 2006 to helping drug addicts. A former substance abuse counselor — whose conviction on murder and DUI charges was overturned just over a year ago — pleaded no contest Thursday in connection with a November 2012 crash in which she fatally injured a pedestrian in Torrance and drove more than two miles with the victim embedded in her windshield.
