Pain killers are often used by teens and adultsThe Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (TDMHSAS) is proud to announce that youth substance use trends are declining in Tennessee according to a new report from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration. Fewer Tennessee youth (6%) used marijuana in the past month than compared to the United States youth (7%). "Youth substance use can take a tremendous toll on individuals, families, and communities. For those that have struggled with, been impacted by youth substance use, or been part of the prevention efforts, these new indicators give us hope." On The Legislature Today, hundreds of pieces of legislation get introduced each legislative session and the House and Senate Judiciary Chairs see most of them. John Shott discuss some of those bills, including the ones they call their top priority-- those that deal with substance abuse. But in the Senate, members are handling the budget process a little bit differently this year, which was evident Thursday in the budget presentation of the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety. Sen. Trump says its an issue that plagues the entire state and lawmakers are doing their best to tackle the issue from all sides. Just as it does each year, that process begins with agency presentations to those committees.

Hartzfeld became part of a growing number of housewives struggling silently and secretly with substance abuse. Women face unique challenges in combating substance abuse, researchers say, often falling more quickly into addiction than do men. The mother of three began taking pain medication to help her cope with an injured tailbone. Sales of prescription opioid pain pills nearly quadrupled from 1999 to 2014, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Kelly Westfall also thought she was hiding her substance abuse issues.
