WSFA : reported that Grant enables AL inmates to overcome substance abuse

This grant allows Alabama inmates serving prison time for drug-related offenses or crimes to have the opportunity for treatments and on-going support. Robert Bentley awarded a $210,605 grant to the Alabama Department of Corrections to continue its drug rehabilitation program in several correctional facilities on Tuesday. "Through this program, inmates who have struggled with drug dependency can take control of their lives and prepare to become responsible citizens once released. Public safety and our communities win when inmates are able to break an addiction," ADECA Director Jim Byard Jr. stated. "Alabama has seen a significant increase in the number of fatalities caused by opioid abuse, and we must assist those suffering from opioid addiction whenever possible," Governor Bentley said.

Herald-News reporter Mike Mallory interviewed Kathleen Burke, who officially began work that same day as director of substance abuse initiatives for Will County, on Friday. Burke: My company worked with Will County under a contract to educate first responders on how to use Naloxone. She also trains first responders and others on how to administer Naloxone, a nasal spray that can reverse the deadly effects of an opioid overdose. Burke is president and owner of addiction and recovery organization Strategic Prevention, and has worked with the county on drug abuse prevention programs that were introduced to school districts. The county was recently approved for a five-year grant from the state to help pay for Burke's position and other programs.
