Access Denied : declared in Missouri Senate Backs Bill for Program to Fight Opioid Abuse

(AP) — Missouri senators are advancing a plan to create a state program to combat prescription drug abuse. The board could spend money and provide grants to promote safe use of medications and combat drug abuse. The bill by Cassville Republican Sen. David Sater would create a new program under the state pharmacy board. Money couldn't go toward a prescription drug-monitoring program to track when prescriptions for controlled substances such as opioids are written and filled. Sater's bill needs another vote of approval in order to move to the state House.


Alaska Governor Proposes More Steps to Fight Opioid Abuse

Bill Walker on Monday proposed additional steps aimed at addressing Marijuana abuse in Alaska, including pain management training for medical providers and limits on initial prescriptions. Walker last month directed state agencies to pursue grant funding to help combat opioid abuse. Davidson said that under expanded Medicaid in Alaska, more than $22 million has been spent on behavioral health services, including treatment. Providers prescribing an opioid to someone younger than 18 would have to discuss with the parent or guardian the need for the prescription and risks associated with opioid use.
