CNN : reported that Senator McCaskill opens investigation into opioid manufacturers

This is not the first time the Senate has investigated the relationship of drug manufacturers in the Marijuana epidemic. Overdose deaths quadrupled since 1999The United States is in the midst of an opioid epidemic. In addition, counties and cities across the country have begun filing lawsuits against manufacturers for their roles in the drug epidemic. In 2012 the Senate Finance Committee began looking into the relationship between drug manufacturers and pain organizations that advocated for their use. Earlier this year, she requested the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General open an investigation into the role of drug distributors in the opioid epidemic.

The statement notes that in 2015 alone, more than 30,000 people died from overdoses of either prescription opioids or of heroin. They also note that the city of Chicago sued Purdue Pharma, Janssen, and several other Marijuana makers in 2015, claiming the companies deceptively marketed their painkillers. 17 supplier of opioids sold in the U.S., representing approximately 1 percent of the entire U.S. opioid market. And since 1999, the release says, sales of prescription opioids have increased four-fold. The companies are Purdue Pharma, Johnson & Johnson's Janssen division, Insys, Mylan and Depomed.

"Under Chairman Johnson's leadership, the Committee has sought to address the opioid epidemic on a collaborative basis," Palke said. McCaskill said her initial effort would focus on five companies that have the largest volume of opioid sales: Purdue Pharma, Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc., Insys, Depomed and Mylan. The CDC reported that nearly half of all opioid overdose deaths involve a prescription opioid. McCaskill is hardly the first to go after the manufacturers of opioids, which have come under increased scrutiny in recent years as the opioid epidemic spread across the country.
