Free-agent safety T.J. McDonald, who played four seasons for the Rams, has been suspended for eight games by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy. McDonald played at USC and was a third-round draft pick by the Rams in 2013. McDonald also was ordered to complete one month in a live-in residential drug program as well as make restitution to the victim in the case. He was put on injured reserve near the end of the 2015 season because of a shoulder injury that required surgery. Last season, he started 16 games and intercepted two passes.

T.J. McDonald, a former standout at safety for the Rams and USC, has been suspended for the first eight games of the 2017 season for a violation of the NFL's substance-abuse policy, the league announced Wednesday. Last May, McDonald was arrested and eventually charged with driving under the influence of a substance other than alcohol, plus reckless driving. In January, prosecutors dropped the DUI charge and McDonald pleaded guilty to reckless driving. McDonald was a third-round draft pick of the Rams in 2013 and, when healthy, a full-time starter at safety. McDonald, 26, became an unrestricted fee agent last month and had not been expected to re-sign with the Rams.

The NFL suspended former Los Angeles Rams safety T.J. McDonald without pay for the first eight games of the 2017 regular season for violating the league's substance abuse program, reports ESPN.com. Last season, McDonald had 64 total tackles and two interceptions. Since being drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL draft, McDonald had started all 53 games he appeared in. In California, "wet reckless" is driving with a notation of alcohol or drug involvement. McDonald, 26, was sentenced to 36 months of probation, and was required to enroll in both a 30-day live-in drug program along with a three-month alcohol and drug education and counseling program.
