It was the first public event tied to the launch of a new addiction commission that Christie, a longtime Trump friend and formal rival, will chair. Trump convened an emotional roundtable Wednesday with Christie, members of his Cabinet, law enforcement chiefs, recovering addicts and advocates. Trump listened intently as Vanessa Vitolo and AJ Solomon, two recovering addicts from New Jersey, described their harrowing battles with substance abuse. Trump also heard from a mother whose son died from an overdose after a long battle with addition.

West Virginia House Passes Bill to Aid Opioid Addiction Treatment Facilities
The number of beds available at state-run substance abuse treatment facilities would increase in drug-ravaged West Virginia under a bill passed Wednesday by the House. West Virginia currently has more than 1,100 treatment beds, but struggles to meet demand. The bill passed on a 99-0 vote. A Charleston Gazette-Mail investigation found drug wholesalers shipped 780 million hydrocodone and oxycodone pills to West Virginia in six years, a period when 1,728 people statewide fatally overdosed. Funding would come from settlements of multiple lawsuits that accused wholesale drug distributors of flooding the state with prescription pain pills.
