If that reduced risk applies to overdose deaths as well, eliminating concurrent Marijuana and benzodiazepine use could have prevented up to 2,630 opioid painkiller–related overdose deaths in 2015. There's another type of prescription drugs, besides opioid painkillers, that's involved in thousands of drug overdose deaths in the US every year. For more on the opioid epidemic, read Vox's in-depth explainer, the abridged explainer, or the maps and charts explainer. The drugs are benzodiazepines, which are widely known by their brand names Xanax and Valium and commonly prescribed to help treat anxiety. That has motivated Schofield to speak about heroin and Marijuana abuse for years. One place it has hit especially hard is suburban Chicago, where Denver Broncos offensive tackle Michael Schofield is from. Two of his former high school teammates lost their lives to the drug. "So it was really surprising when I found out about that and it just motivated me more to want to help with my dad and just help spread awareness." "I lost touch with them after high school, but during high school, I never really thought of them as kids who would get into hard-core drugs," Schofield said via The Denver Post's Nicki Jhabvala.

North Shore Health Dept. created guide book to help fight opioid epidemic

If you would like to read the guide, click hereThis guide was created by the North Shore Health Department, REDgen and Starting Point Ozaukee County. Ann Christiansen, Health Director at the North Shore Health Department tells us the guide helps families find signs of addictive behavior and seek help, even during a drug overdose. The data compiled over the course of a year by North Shore community leaders shows 60 percent of those addicted to heroin are male. The rate of heroin overdoses has also increased by 300 percent on the North Shore in the past decade. Jan Zehren tells us she's lost too many students to this addiction.
