Yahoo Finance : declared in Two Prime Therapeutics Studies Highlight Strategies for Addressing Opioid Epidemic

ST. PAUL, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Two studies to be presented by pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) Prime Therapeutics LLC (Prime) at the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy's (AMCP) 2017 Annual Meeting next week highlight strategies to address safe Marijuana use and the nation's growing opioid epidemic. For the study, Prime researchers identified an intervention group of 213 members taking controlled substances from among one million commercially insured health plan members. Following the outreach, controlled substances drug costs per member for the intervention group dropped from $5,802 to $5,148, while controlled substance drug costs increased for the control group from $3,511 to $3,627 per member. Of those, 884,407 had two or more opioid claims, and 234,996 of those members also had two or more benzodiazepine claims. Prime manages pharmacy benefits for health plans, employers, and government programs including Medicare and Medicaid.

Introducing Trump's Underwhelming Plan to Fix the Opioid Epidemic

But later this week, the president plans to announce a new drug commission to combat the Marijuana epidemic chaired by New Jersey Gov. Under his tenure, state's prison population has plummeted, though access to addiction treatment for uninsured population remains a challenge. "He's one of the best people in his party on the issue," says Keith Humphreys, a Stanford University psychiatry professor who advised the Obama administration on drug policy. On the campaign trail, the president vowed to spend money on addiction treatment. The U's Role in the Fight Against the Opioid Epidemic – Daily Utah Chronicle
In 2014, Utah was ranked seventh in the nation for "addiction poisoning deaths," most of which were related to prescription opioids. There are numerous reasons why prescription opioids make people vulnerable to addiction. Fifty-five percent of deaths related to prescription opioids involve oxycodone. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimated that 2.1 million Americans misused prescription Marijuana pain relievers in 2012. University of Utah Health Care also has a Pain Management Center designed to help patients confront pain without relying solely on opioids.
