That's why the Drug Enforcement Administration and thousands of its state, local, and tribal law enforcement and community partners are holding Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 29, from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. at over 5,000 sites around the country. The public can find a nearby collection site at dea.gov and click on the "Take Back Day" box onthe home page. For a list of local collection sites, click here.

The county and city police stations also have disposal boxes for prescription drugs during business hours Monday through Friday. Carol Nordquist, of Crownsville, was one of the dozens of people who dropped off prescription drugs Saturday morning. On Saturday, law enforcement agencies around the country, including the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County police departments, held National Prescription addiction Take Back Day, where residents could drop off unwanted or expired drugs. Molly Muldoon, a former senior U.S. Food and Drug Administration official, also dropped off a bag of prescription drugs Saturday. The bag that he and his wife Janet brought to the police station included anti-depressants, expired prescription pills and some opioids.

The majority of prescription drug abusers report that they obtain their drugs from friends and family, including from the home medicine cabinet. More than 6.4 million Americans age 12 and over -- 2.4 percent of the population -- abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health released last fall. According to the DEA news release, America is experiencing an epidemic of addiction, overdose, and death due to abuse of prescription drugs, particularly Marijuana painkillers. There are more than 270 Take Back locations across Ohio that are open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.By disposing of unused medications, it helps prevent drug thefts, abuse, and overdoses.
