Bloomberg View Editorial: Stepping up the fight against opioid addiction

Ideally, the White House commission on Marijuana abuse and addiction, led by New Jersey Gov. America's opioid epidemic is growing and changing, and it will take both ingenuity and determination to bring it under control. The Senate is also considering taxing prescription opioids to help pay for addiction-treatment services, as are lawmakers in Alaska and California. Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control has launched an ad campaign to warn Americans about the risk of addiction. The use of methadone and buprenorphine in treating addiction, now being expanded nationwide, has doubled success rates.

Massachusetts lawmakers taking steps to fight the opioid epidemic
They believe the federal, state and local governments all need to be working together in order to solve the problem. Governor Karyn Polito told 22News the Baker administration's working with the medical community to reduce Marijuana prescriptions, and law enforcement to crack down on dealers. (WWLP) – More than 1,400 people died of opioid overdoses in Massachusetts last year. Polito added that the state received a $12-million federal grant to get more people in treatment and recovery, and to reduce drug trafficking. "It's like everyone has a relative who has that as an issue."The opioid epidemic continues to be a topic of concern in our state and across the country.
