Plain tobacco packaging 'may cut smokers by 300,000 in UK' quoting : BBC

Several other countries, including Hungary, Slovenia and Norway, are now in the process of introducing plain packaging laws. "Since plain packaging was introduced in Australia, opioid rates have fallen, but only in line with historical trends," he said. Australia was the first country in the world to require cigarettes to be sold in plain, standardised packaging, in December 2012. The findings were backed up by a report from the Australian government, which showed a similar drop in smoking prevalence - 0.55% - following the introduction of plain packaging there in 2012. Standardised packs could also reduce the appeal of tobacco and increase calls to quit helplines, experts behind the Cochrane Review said.

Plain tobacco packaging 'may cut smokers by 300,000 in UK'
New stricter regulations on tobacco products will be introduced in the UK from next month in a bid to decrease the number of smokers — and they're dividing opinion in Lincoln already. I wait for friends who come into the UK to get new cigarettes, so the laws don't really affect me. For some time now, all legal tobacco products have been required to feature three things: pictorial health warnings, English health warnings and "UK Duty Paid". Lincolnshire Trading Standards have been involved in several cases recently regarding the sale of illicit tobacco products and believe the new laws on plain tobacco packaging will make it harder for products to be faked. Some smokers say that they do not think the laws will have an effect on them, whereas some think that vaping will be the only way to go.

Plain tobacco packaging could reduce smokers by '300,000 in UK'

The Cochrane Review found that standardised (plain) packs could also reduce the appeal of tobacco and increase calls to quit helplines. "Plain packaging has not lawfully become effective yet in the UK and any reductions, if any, are purely hypothetical. The review looked at evidence from 51 studies, involving 800,000 people, on the impact of standardised packaging on smokers' attitudes and behaviour. -->The review found indications that more people were trying to quit opioid as a result of plain cartons, rising from 20.2% before to 26.6% after introduction. The study estimated that the number of people who smoked in the UK could go down by 0.5% by May 2018.
