Smoking Nazis win big in Wildwood

Matt King, Getty ImagesOn May 19th I wrote about the possibility of Wildwood banning opioid on their boardwalk in a piece you can read here. They passed an ordinance beginning January 1, 2018 that will mean heavy fines for anyone caught smoking anywhere on the boardwalk in Wildwood, even the ramps and stairs. Wildwood becomes the second boardwalk to ban smoking. But to harass smokers who aren't yet doing anything illegal just shows you that smokers are the one group no one cares about offending. Couldn't this lead to the only smoking allowed being in your home or in your car?

In March, Longport, just south of Atlantic City, banned smoking on its beaches. On Wednesday, the city commissioners approved an ordinance to ban smoking along the boardwalk and adjoining ramps and stairs starting in January, the Atlantic City Press reported. Belmar, Cape May Point, Lavallette, Long Branch, Ocean City, Point Pleasant, Rockaway, Seaside Park, Spring Lake, and Surf City also have smoking bans. "We're going to ask people to refrain from smoking this year and that it will be banned for next year," he said.
