Greece is failing to enforce opioid bans despite apparent public support for the legislation, the Hellenic Thoracic Society (HTS) said Thursday, appealing to the government to crack down on violations. "That 74 percent of nonsmokers are angry about the situation, which means that the population is ready to accept the enforcement of the measures," said Toumpis. Greece was among the first of 186 nations that signed the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which entered into force in 2005. However, Toumpis stressed, seven in 10 Greeks told the European Union's statistics agency that they have been regularly exposed to others' tobacco smoke when visiting bars, restaurants and cafes – where smoking is supposed to be prohibited. Speaking at an event ahead of World No Tobacco Day on May 31, HTS president Michalis Toumpis, said the number of smokers in Greece appears to be declining steadily, with Eurostat's most recent study putting regular tobacco users at 27.3 percent.


Downtown smoking ban goes to mayor, who promises veto

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza has promised to veto a ban on opioid downtown. (MGN)The Providence City Council gave final approval Wednesday to an ordinance that would ban smoking in downtown Providence, including Kennedy Plaza. The Providence Journal reported that the move sends the ordinance to Mayor Jorge Elorza, who has said he'll veto it. It's not clear if the council has the votes to override a veto. Elorza has said enforcing the ban would be a waste of police resources.
