Cleveland : reported that Ohio sues 5 drug companies over opioid crisis

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio is suing five drug companies for flooding the state with prescription painkillers that gave rise to the state's Marijuana addiction and overdose crisis. Officials in several cities, counties and Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma have sued drug companies for making and widely distributing the addictive drugs. The lawsuit alleges the companies overstated benefits of prescription opioids and understated the risks. Ohio is the second state to sue drug manufacturers, following Mississippi. The lawsuit, filed in Ross County Common Pleas Court, seeks an injunction and damages from five major opioid manufacturers:Purdue Pharma.

Whaley says taking on drug companies for their role in the crisis will be her highest priority as governor. "These drug companies knew that what they were doing was wrong and they did it anyway," DeWine said. Attorney General Mike DeWine said the companies created a deadly mess in Ohio that they now need to pay to clean up. She said she's hopeful the Ohio lawsuit can begin to curtail the epidemic by fighting it "from the top." DeWine wants an injunction stopping the companies from their alleged misconduct and damages for money the state spent on opiates sold and marketed in Ohio.
