Mental health issues linked to substance abuseBy Christina CoxLast update: Monday, July 24th, 2017A 2014 survey conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that an estimated 20.2 million adults had a substance use disorder in the past year. Also called a "co-occurring" mental and substance disorder, individuals struggling with mental health issues may turn to drugs or alcohol as a means to self-medicate. "We try to train therapists to know how to manage addiction and also how to manage the mental health issues," he said. Oftentimes individuals who are using do not realize they are using medications, drugs or other substances to help them with the mental health issues they're struggling with.

University of Findlay to offer substance abuse minor

Students who complete the Substance Use Disorders minor will be eligible to apply for the Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant License (CDCA). The University of Findlay will be offering a new minor for the upcoming school year. For more information, call Robin Walters-Powell at 419-434-6955 or email her at walters-powell@findlay.edu. Starting in August, UF students will have to option to minor in "Substance Use Disorders" in an effort to educate students and the community on all aspects of addictions. The minor, situated in the Social Work and Gerontology program, will consist of four core courses available to students of any major as well as members of the community.
