Joko Widodo: Police should shoot suspected drug dealers according to : Al Jazeera

Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, Indonesia's president, has instructed police to shoot suspected drug dealers to combat what he considers a narcotics emergency facing the country. Joko Widodo supports increasing use of force against suspected drug traffickers as country faces 'narcotics emergency'. "Be firm, especially to foreign drug dealers who enter the country and resist arrest. "From experience on the ground, to be honest, when we shoot drug traffickers, they go away," national police chief General Tito Karnavian was quoted as saying by local news websites. Widodo has previously been criticised for ordering executions against convicted drug traffickers who were given a death penalty by the court.

Joko Widodo: Police should shoot suspected drug dealers
WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - Just one night after a saturation patrol in Wilkes-Barre aimed at making a dent in crime, police are taking action on a suspected drug house. Some of the key results include 12 drug arrests, 9 DUI arrests, and 11 individuals arrested for outstanding warrants. Several law enforcement agencies including Pennsylvania State Police, Wilkes-Barre police and the Luzerne County drug task force teamed-up for phase two of what's called "Operation Triggerlock". They arrested 39-year-old Larry Gilliam Jr. and seized illegal narcotics, weapons and suspected cash from drug trafficking. Back to Friday night's saturation patrol in the diamond city.

Police programs that help drug users get into rehab catching on

Modeled after a pioneering initiative in Gloucester, Mass., the programs seek to change the relationship between police and drug users. They team treatment-seekers with social workers and "recovery liaisons" — former drug users who know how to navigate the challenges of staying sober once rehab is finished. Such are the varying results of Safe Passage-like programs that have proliferated since Dixon began its version. In return, police dispose of the narcotics without pressing charges and fast-track the users into rehab. Users walk into a police station, surrender whatever drugs and paraphernalia they have and ask for help (people caught while committing a crime aren't eligible).
