More than 33,000 people died of opioid overdose, with another 20,000 dying from other drugs. As more and more parents are lost to opioid addiction, the foster care system is struggling to keep up. Commission urges Trump to declare opioid crisis a national emergency

Chris Christie released an interim report this week that calls on President Trump to officially declare the opioid crisis a national emergency. The White House opioid commission led by New Jersey Gov. But according to Richard Baum, acting White House drug czar, the White House already is pursuing some of the recommendations to protect against abuse. The Trump administration is taking action on other fronts. Loudoun County, one of the richest counties in the nation, has seen a rise in the "wide variety" of people struggling with opioid abuse in recent years, he said.
