That's a record number according to an annual report published Thursday by the University of Washington's Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute. Heroin was the probable cause in 118 of the opioid-related deaths, which is actually down slightly from 2015 (132) and 2014 (156). RELATED: As opioid deaths spike, new push to save overdosing usersThe figures might seem dispiriting, but the number of opioid-related deaths actually stayed relatively flat from 2015. Opponents have pitted CHELs against treatment options over the last few months as three King County city councils voted to ban safe-injection sites in their cities.

In at least one county across the country, drug overdose deaths are dropping. That is in stark contrast to the rest of the nation and region where drug overdose deaths have been rising annually for the last several years. Westmoreland County saw a record number of drug overdose deaths last year with 174 fatalities, preceded in 2015 with 126 deaths and 2014 with 87 deaths. So far in 2017, 66 drug overdose deaths have been recorded and an additional 49 are being investigated as such. It's a similar story in Allegheny County where 650 people died from a drug overdose last year, preceded by 424 people in 2015 and 306 deaths in 2014.

"This report highlights the terrible fact that drug overdoses continue to be a leading cause of death in our community" Dr. Jeff Duchin, health officer for Public Health-Seattle & King County, said in a release. In 2015, 320 people in King county died from drug related deaths. Researchers also saw a spike in methamphetamine related deaths since 2011. In 2017 there were 98 methamphetamine related deaths compared to 20 deaths five years prior.
